Public authorities in developing countries must step up the deployment of energy storage to support the expansion of off-grid renewable energy generation, according to the Alliance for Rural Electrification.
A report published by the body says the development and enforcement of regulations for energy storage, and financial support to stimulate its adoption, will play a “key role” in increasing energy access in the developing world.
The report, Using batteries to ensure clean, reliable and affordable universal electricity access was published to mark the launch of an ARE energy storage campaign aiming to get authorities, regulators and businesses aware of the benefits of off-grid battery storage in rural areas with no electricity.
The report covers various barriers facing off-grid renewable energy storage facilities in electricity deprived rural areas.
Detailing technical to financial aspects, the report summarised a need for subsidies and education campaigns from public authorities to entice retailers and business leaders.
Referring to off-grid storage as “a big potential niche for the battery market”, the report states the need to promote off-grid battery storage in developing countries to the private sector and business leaders with attractive regulations and subsidies.
The report also recommended education campaigns on the advantages of battery storage being “channelled” through retailers and training and capacity specialist organisations, also technical assistance from rural electrification agencies.
ARE secretary general Marcus Wiemann said: “Energy “Energy storage is currently in the spotlight”, says Marcus Wiemann, ARE Secretary General. “Batteries can ease the path towards deeper penetration of renewable energy technologies by ensuring reliability, efficiency and price-competitiveness of electricity services. There is no doubt that this technology will play a key role to achieve universal access to electricity.”
During the six-month campaign, ARE will run a series of energy storage themed workshops, business delegations and webinars on energy storage aimed at local energy sector decision makers.
