German utility RWE has commissioned a 16MW solar PV plant in Hungary.
The plant, located on top of a decommissioned sludge basin in Visonta, northeast of Budapest, includes 72,480 solar modules with a nominal capacity of 255W each.
The project was developed in collaboration with companies from Hungary, Austria and Romania.
At the end of 2014 the installed solar energy capacity in Hungary was approximately 80MW. The share of renewables in gross power consumption was 6.8% at the time. By the end of 2020 this is to increase to at least 10.9%, said RWE.
In July, German firm IBC Solar started working on what is expected to be the biggest solar plant in Hungary at 18.5MW.
