Southern Company and Turner Renewable Energy – owned by US media mogul Ted Turner – will jointly acquire a 20MW photovoltaic (PV) installation in California.
Southern Power, a subsidiary of Atlanta-based energy provider Southern Company, announced the agreement to acquire the Adobe Solar Facility, which will be built by SunEdison.
The two companies formed a strategic alliance in January 2010 through a Turner subsidiary for the purpose of developing renewable energy capacity in the US. To date the alliance has focused on developing and investing in solar PV projects where conditions are most favourable.
In addition to building the plant, SunEdison will also be responsible for operation and maintenance. The plant is located on a 65-hectare site in Kern County, California.
Construction of the facility has already begun, with an expected completion date of spring 2014. Electricity generated will be sold to electricity supply company Southern California Edison through a 20-year power purchase agreement.
Southern Company claims to have installed over 1.7GW of additional renewable energy resources since January 2012.
