The University of California Merced is the newest member of SunPower’s solar power installations. SunPower completed a 1MW solar power system on the campus, which is expected to generate two-thirds of the campus’ electricity on summer afternoons and 20% of its annual electricity needs. SunPower will finance the project through a sale leaseback transaction.
“Colleges and universities in California are seizing the opportunity to help the state meet its growing energy demand and renewable energy goals,” said Bill Kelly, managing director, at SunPower. “UC Merced understands the significant return on investment that SunPower systems deliver, and the added value of working with an experienced partner.”
The UC Merced system uses SunPower solar panels and the SunPower T20 Tracker system. Under the terms of a long-term power purchase agreement, UC Merced will be enabled to receive the renewable energy credits and all environmental attributes that come with the installation of the system.
