Suntech Power Holdings’ founder, chairman and CEO, Dr. Zhengrong Shi, has been honored as a finalist for the Zayed Future Energy Prize at an awards ceremony in Abu Dhabi on January 19. The annual award recognizes accomplishments that “reflect innovation, long-term vision and leadership in renewable energy and sustainability.”
“Under the steady guidance of Dr. Zhengrong Shi, Suntech has been driving the expansion of solar power around the world,” said Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, director general of the Zayed Future Energy Prize. “The Zayed Future Energy Prize honors those who understand the importance of learning from the past, the urgency of addressing the threats of the present and the vision to pave the way to a sustainable future. The jury for the Zayed Future Energy Prize recognized this in Dr. Zhengrong’s achievements – but more importantly, they were inspired by his accomplishments, his passion, and his vision for a future where everyone has reliable access to nature’s cleanest and most abundant energy resource.”
Shi received a prize of US$350,000 at the awards ceremony from His Highness General Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces. Shi said he would be donating the funds to the Shi Family Foundation, which provides solar systems to schools throughout the Middle East.
“It is a great honor to receive this award,” said Shi. “Recognition also belongs to Suntech employees and partners around the world – professionals who are passionate about solar energy and its power to change the way we live. It also recognizes the leadership of governments, large and small, who have created commercial environments that encourage long-term investment in tomorrow’s energy solutions, today.”
Shi founded Suntech in 2001 after receiving a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of New South Wales in Australia.
