The UK has installed 2GW of solar in 2014 so far, according to figures from NPD Solarbuzz.
The data, shared exclusively with PV Tech’s sister site Solar Power Portal, marks a record in the country’s booming PV sector.
“Two-thirds of the new solar PV capacity added so far this year has come from large-scale solar PV farms that exceed 5MW in size,” writes Finlay Colville, vice president, NPD Solarbuzz.
“In fact, three-quarters of the 2GW of new capacity this year has been located on the ground, as opposed to rooftops,” added Colville, pointing out that this goes some way to explaining the UK government’s efforts to discourage larger solar projects in favour of mid-sized rooftop installations.
Colville also explains how new policy priorities may influence the UK solar industry’s patterns of deployment and the prospects of another record year in 2015 when these are taken into account.
