NRG Energy, Inc., one of the country’s leaders in power generation, has teamed up with thermal power generator, eSolar, to develop solar power plants with a total generation capacity of up to 500MW. The plants, to be in production as early as 2011, can power up to 400,000 homes with 100% clean solar electricity in California and Southwest areas of the United States.
Michael Liebelson, Chief Development Officer Low Carbon Technology for NPG Energy said, “This is NRG’s first venture into solar power and it brings an exceptionally important component to the low- and no-carbon focus of our RepoweringNRG program.”
“eSolar’s breakthrough modular power plants use more software and less steel to allow solar energy to be competitive with fossil fuels for the first time ever,” added Bill Gross, CEO of the Pasadena, California-based company, eSolar, which has recently partnered with companies such as Idealab and Google.com for the purpose of developing global power projects. As of now, there are zero fully functioning solar thermal power tower plants in the United States.
