A start-up, SUNRGI, based in the U.S. has claimed that its ‘Xtreme Concentrated Photovoltaics’ (XCPV) solar system technology will be able to meet electricity generating costs of 5 cents per kWh (kilowatt hour), making it competitive with conventional energy generation technologies.
The XCPV is said to reach concentrated levels of more than 1,600 times the sun’s energy using a new lens design coupled to a highly efficient solar cell design. To allow such concentration levels a proprietary heat removal system was also invented.
“In a little more than a year we were able to develop and successfully test XCPV,” said Robert S. (Bob) Block, co-founder and SUNRGI principal. “We expect the SUNRGI system to become available for both on- and off-grid power applications, worldwide, in twelve to fifteen months.”
