Meyer Burger has concluded a CHF 70 million wire saw and wafer inspection systems contract with an unnamed customer in Asia. The contract will enable the customer to expand its production facility during next year.

Motech Industries' consolidated solar cell shipments reached 102MW at the end of October 2010. This figure was accomplished after achieving 1.15GW capacity through Q3'10. This places Motech as the first Taiwan-based solar cell manufacturer to have reached over 1GW capacity and to have shipped over 100MW in a single month.

Hybrid thin-film photovoltaic (TFPV) solar cell developer and manufacturer XsunX has increased the conversion efficiency levels of its cell devices to 15.1% based on the company's CIGSolar technology. Deposition of the CIGS cell layers was conducted on full-size 125mm square substrates.

Research at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven and Los Alamos national laboratories has identified transparent thin films that are claimed to be able to absorb light and produce an electric charge over a comparably large area. The material has been described in the journal, Chemistry of Materials, by scientists from the laboratory as having the potential ability to be used in the production of transparent solar panels or windows, which would take in the solar energy and convert it to usable electricity.

TechPrecision has formed a wholly foreign owned enterprise (WFOE) called Wuxi Critical Mechanical Components, created to help fulfill the increased demand in the Asian, specifically Chinese, market for solar and nuclear energy manufacturing and machining components. TechPrecision was able to complete the WFOE with help from one of its current customers who remains unnamed.

Dow Electronic Materials is to construct a new manufacturing facility in Eastern China, to be located at the company's Zhangjiagang site in the province of Jiangsu, approximately 98km from Shanghai. The new facility is aimed at meeting the growing material demand for photovoltaic and other electronic markets in Asia.

Pfeiffer Vacuum Technology has revealed its intention to acquire Alcatel-Lucent's Adixen vacuum technology unit, headquartered in Annecy, France. Negotiations on the purchase of the companies, patents and licenses belonging to this unit have been largely finalized with Pfeiffer Vacuum's supervisory board consenting to the acquisition on November 3.

The Chinese National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) has approved a pre-feasibility study for the construction of the first phase of First Solar's 30MW thin-film solar power plant located in Ordos City, Inner Mongolia. This phase marks the beginning of 2GW which are to be implemented in the area through 2019.
