Researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) have achieved a new record of 10.6% for the power-conversion efficiency of an organic polymer solar cell. Certified by the United States’ National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), the record was achieved using a tandem device to harvest a wider range of the solar spectrum.

An EU-funded project has been launched to encourage the development of new organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells. With a budget of €14.2 million, the four-year initiative is to be led by the Swiss Centre for Electronics and Microtechnology (CSEM).

DuPont Microcircuit Materials (MCM) has announced the release of its latest photovoltaic metallization paste, with 15% less silver than previous pastes. The introduction of the Solamet PV51M comes as part of the company’s continued attempts to reduce the silver content of its pastes by 20%, in the face of rising silver prices.

Photon Energy has been contracted to construct a 1MW installation in the town of Ellrich, Germany on a former landfill site. It is the Czech PV installer’s first German ground-mounted project, having already begun work on a number of rooftop installations in the north-east of the country.

Wagner Academy, the PV training school set up by the newly-formed UK arm of Wagner Solar, has received the SOLAR Industry Award 2011 in the Industry Development category. The accolade was presented to the UK-based academy at the 26th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition (EU PVSEC).

Supplier of wet processing technology RENA and laser systems-provider InnoLas have announced that they are to form a technology and sales partnership. According to InnoLas, the two German companies will pool their technical expertise to develop easily-fabricated and high-efficiency PV cells. As part of the partnership, RENA will also sell equipment from InnoLas, although further details about the deal were not disclosed.
