Croatian developer ENNA Solar has signed an agreement to acquire a 166MW solar PV project with a 612MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Romania.
ENNA Solar will acquire a 100% equity stake in Romanian special purpose company CIC Green Energy Medgidia, which holds the rights to develop the 204-hectare Medgidia project, which will be located in Romania’s Constanța County.

Construction of the Medgidia project is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2027, and the facility is expected to enter commercial operations and supply the grid by the first quarter of 2028. The expected annual electricity generation output amounts to 265,932 MWh, the company says.
“We are open to cooperation on renewable energy projects that are at an advanced stage of development or ready for construction,” said Boštjan Napast, president of the management board of the ENNA Group. “ENNA wants to be part of Europe’s green transition, and our vision is of an energy system increasingly powered by clean energy sources.”
The ENNA Group’s ten-year plan for solar investment in its native Croatia and beyond includes the Mihăilești solar-plus-storage project southwest of Bucharest, which will pair 87.5MWp with 140MWh of BESS. The company said yesterday that the project’s solar component has reached “89% completion,” while its batteries will be delivered in December this year.
The group said that it expects commercial operation to begin in April 2027, later than the stated grid connection date of the third quarter of 2026 proposed in April 2025.
Other organisations to have invested in Romania’s solar-plus-storage sector, include the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), which provided a €120 million financing package for the Părău 2 project in the central city of Brașov. The facility will have combine 342MW of solar PV with 300MWh of BESS and will be developed by independent power producer (IPP) Econergy.
According to the Romanian Energy Regulatory Authority (ANRE), Romania added 2.2GW of solar power to its generation portfolio in 2025, taking the total installed solar capacity to in excess of 7GW.
Romania is also home to what will be Europe’s largest onshore renewable energy project, the 1.3GWp Dama Solar project in Arad County, western Romania, which is expected to be operational in the second half of 2028. The facility is owned by IPP Rezolv Energy, which secured a €561 million to build and operate the facility.
