Trina Solar has ordered two GT Solar International DSS450HP crystalline ingot growth systems. The order totaled US$23.8 million and will be incorporated into GT Solar’s backlog for its third quarter fiscal year 2011, which ends January 1, 2011.

An unidentified Asian-based solar cell and module manufacturer has placed a two year multi-crystalline wafer sales contract with REC, valued at approximately US$200 million.

AMG Advanced Metallurgical Group has bought the intellectual property and manufacturing g assets for BP Solar International’s Mono2 solar casting technology. Furthermore, AMG has also secured a team of scientists and engineers with a background in silicon casting who will be able to continue the research and development with manufacturing operations at BP Solar’s Maryland facility.

Starting in 2012, the European market will no longer allow incandescent light bulbs and seeing the necessity to look towards new markets, Emgo, a producer of light bulbs, will see two of its management team members create a new solar glass start-up: Ducatt NV. Seeing the potential of the new company, Capricorn Cleantech Fund (CCF) and LRM have pledged to invest €20 million into the new venture.

President Barack Obama’s signing of the tax legislation passed by the U.S. Congress late last week included a holiday gift for the solar industry in the form of a one-year extension of the Department of Treasury Section 1603 “cash grant in lieu of investment tax credit” program. But the Treasury Grant Program reprieve was not the only news out of Washington with solar industry implications, as the Departments of Energy and Interior made several other moves.

On December 23, 2010, a significant milestone will be reached at the Thun headquarters of Meyer Burger Wafertec, with the Swiss equipment specialist manufacturing its 1,000th wafer slicing machine of 2010.

Meyer Burger Technology has had an impressive few weeks scoring two big orders and has added a third order from a customer in Asia. The US$57.1 million (CHF55 million) deal will see MB Wafertec, a division of Meyer Burger, supply slicing, bricking and automated gluing systems while wafer inspection systems will be delivered by Hennecke Systems. Delivery is scheduled for 2011.

Dow Electronic Materials broke ground on its new Eastern China manufacturing facility, located at the company’s Zhangjiagang site in JiangSu Province, approximately 98 kilometers from Shanghai. City government officials and employees took part in the groundbreaking event.

Photovoltaics manufacturing equipment supplier GT Solar has received a $47.3 million order from South Korea-based polysilicon producer OCI for its newest SDR400 CVD reactors. Representing the third order by OCI for GT Solar’s SDR400 reactors, the new systems will be installed as the first phase of the customer's recently announced polysilicon capacity expansion plan. The order will be included in GT's backlog for its current quarter (Q3 FY11), which ends on Jan. 1.
