Wacker Chemie returned to profit in 2010 on the back of strong demand across all sectors, but few were more important than in the PV sector with strong polysilicon demand and a large amount of prepayments secured under long-term contracts. Consolidated sales for Wacker Polysilicon increased 22% to €1.37 billion, compared to sales of €1.12 billion in the previous year.

As Danen works on its second phase of construction for its wafer plant II in Guanyin Shiang, Taoyuan County Taiwan, Bloomberg has reported that the company signed a US$161 million contract with OCI, where Danen will buy polysilicon from the company for seven years.

SunPower has said that after talks with its various Japanese-based suppliers, none have sustained major damage to their facilities, though “certain operations are currently disrupted due to infrastructure issues,” the company stated.

Taiwan-based Green Energy Technology (GET) has formed a supply partnership with local firms, Motech Industries and Taiwan Polysilicon Corp. A statement from GET, issued to the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TSE) said that a joint venture (JV) would be established between the companies a multi-crystalline wafer company vertically integrating with polysilicon, solar wafer and solar cell manufacturing.

Production of polysilcon continues to expand as major suppliers attempt to keep pace with market demand. Wacker Chemie has updated plans to expand its polysilicon production that includes spending €130 million on debottlenecking measures to add 10,000MT more capacity. Wacker noted that it is essentially sold out under supply contracts through 2014.

PV module encapsulants supplier, STR Holdings posted 2010 sales to the solar sector of US$259.2 million, an increase of 73.4%, compared to sales of US$149.5 million in 2009. Management noted that the increase in sales was due to increased market share gains with its current Tier 1 Chinese customers as well starting to supply a large Asian module manufacturer in the year.

Korean polysilicon supplier OCI Company has signed a 7-year polysilicon supply contract with Taiwan-based Green Energy Technology (GET), worth US$507 million.The contract begins in 2012 through 2018.

SunSi Energies has finalized its majority acquisition, with 60% equity interest, in He Xie Silicon (Wendeng). The trichlorosilane (TCS) facility in Weihai City, China also has a 40% minority shareholder who will maintain their equity interest share in the company. SunSi notes that Wendeng’s entire management team and all of its employees will remain with the company.

In the recently published report by NanoMarkets, Smart Coatings in Photovoltaics, which looks into self-cleaning, self-healing, electrochromic and thermochromic coatings used in the PV industry over the next eight years, the claim is made that by 2016, sales of smart coatings to the PV market will be US$504 million and grow to US$847 million by 2018. NanoMarkets points out that smart coatings offer solar panel makers the ability to increase efficiency, lower costs and produce higher value-added products, all of which are determining factors in the increased success of the smart coatings industry.
