Energy independence means more than simply generating power at home. As extreme weather, grid pressure, rising electricity prices and increasingly volatile energy markets reshape the energy landscape, homeowners are looking for ways to keep essential appliances running during outages while making better use of the energy they generate.

According to a global residential energy storage whitepaper by Hoymiles and TÜV SÜD, global residential storage shipments reached a record 35 GWh in 2025, up nearly 50% year on year, the growth reflecting a broader shift in residential energy storage from a “nice-to-have” to a “must-have” as homeowners seek greater resilience, flexibility and control over their energy.

For homeowners, energy independence is about having greater control over energy costs, power availability and how energy is used.

Rising electricity prices are increasing the value of self-generated energy, while declining feed-in tariffs and the growing occurrence of zero or negative electricity prices are making it less attractive to export surplus solar power. Storing and using more self-generated energy can therefore help households reduce reliance on grid electricity and better manage energy costs.

Energy resilience is equally important. Extreme weather and growing pressure on power infrastructure can lead to unexpected outages, making reliable backup power essential for keeping critical household loads running when the grid goes down.

As EVs, heat pumps and other high-power loads become more common, smarter energy management is also becoming increasingly valuable. Dynamic tariffs, VPPs and AI-powered energy management are enabling households to optimize when and how energy is stored and consumed, so they can reduce electricity bills, maximize self-consumption and rely less on the grid.

At the heart of the ecosystem is HiOne, Hoymiles’ all-in-one BESS integrating the inverter, battery and EMS into a seamless, compact system. With an 8,000+ cycle life, whole-home backup with 0ms switching and scalable capacity of up to 64 kWh, HiOne is built for safe, reliable and future-ready home energy. Its AI-powered TOU optimization learns electricity prices, household consumption and renewable energy forecasts to automatically optimize charging and discharging, helping homeowners maximize self-consumption and reduce energy costs.
