US energy company PowerBank has reacquired two New York community solar projects totalling 13.9MW, with a combined construction value of US$32.5 million.

The 6.9MW Highway 28 project is expected to reach construction readiness in Q3 2026, while the 7MW Gainesville project is expected to follow in 2027. The developer has signed interconnection agreements for both projects.

Highway 28 has also secured major discretionary permits and US$893,445 in New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) incentives, with a further US$1.52 million expected through the Inclusive Community Solar Adder programme. On-site preparation work has begun.

“We are excited to be growing our independent power producer portfolio by reacquiring two distributed solar projects in New York State. These are projects we originated, developed and secured interconnection for, so we understand them thoroughly, and we know what it takes to bring them to commercial operation,” said Richard Lu, PowerBank’s CEO.

“The acquisition of these projects supports our continued shift toward asset ownership, which builds recurring revenue. As Highway 28 is in advanced stages of development, we are looking forward to full onsite mobilisation in the coming months.”

PowerBank said both projects are expected to retain eligibility for federal investment tax credits (ITCs) under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), as physical work had started before the 4 July 2026 deadline (subscription required). The company expects the two projects to generate US$13 million in federal ITCs.

The projects had previously been sold to an investor as part of a larger transaction announced in January 2025 and have been reacquired by PowerBank following an announcement in April 2026. The acquisition prices are US$1.25 million for Highway 28 and US$1.15 million for Gainesville, payable through milestone payments.

Both projects were planned to operate as community solar facilities once completed.

Apart from this, the company continued to advance its distributed energy pipeline. In the Canadian province of Nova Scotia, PowerBank led development of the 6.86MW Brooklyn ground-mounted community solar project, which completed environmental permitting in this month.

Meanwhile, in Ontario, PowerBank advanced permitting for its battery energy storage (BESS) 903 utility-scale battery storage project while continuing construction on local solar developments, including a 4MW project in North Bruce Peninsula.

Last year, PowerBank Corporation entered into a loan agreement with NY Green Bank for a revolving credit facility with an initial principal amount of up to US$8 million to fund utility interconnection deposits for solar and BESS projects in New York.

SunShare completes 6MWdc community solar garden in Santa Fe

In other news, US community solar developer SunShare has completed and energised the 6MWdc Juniper Sol community solar garden in Santa Fe County, New Mexico.

The 31-acre project is expected to serve nearly 2,000 households and incorporates agrivoltaic (agriPV) practices, including the construction of native and pollinator-friendly habitats. The project entered commercial operation on 1 July.

SunShare also energised the 4.5MWdc Rockhound Sol community solar project in Deming, New Mexico. The two projects mark SunShare’s first community solar gardens in the state.

“Our nation’s electricity needs are rapidly growing, and the Juniper Sol project demonstrates how community-based solar can cost-effectively and quickly meet that demand. At the same time, these types of projects bring wide-ranging benefits, such as to the 2,000 families who are saving on electricity costs for the next 25 years with their subscriptions to this garden,” said David Amster-Olszewski, CEO, SunShare.

SunShare is a US community solar developer founded in 2011 and headquartered in Denver, Colorado. The company has more than 110MW of operating community solar capacity and a 455MW development pipeline as of 2026.

Colorado accounted for 40MW of its operating portfolio across 25 community solar gardens, with a further 21MW in development across 10 projects. SunShare also has a significant operating and development footprint in Minnesota and the wider Midwest, serving more than 13,000 residential subscribers.

Its Colorado portfolio includes the 5MW Uncompahgre Community Solar Garden in Weld County, while its development pipeline includes a 12MW portfolio awarded by Xcel Energy for six projects in the Denver metropolitan area.
