JinkoSolar has announced that it has connected China Guangdong Nuclear Solar Energy Development’s 18MW PV power plant to China’s grid. The plant, located in Dunhuang, Gansu Province in west China, consists of 76,000 of JinkoSolar’s modules on a plot area of 400,000m2.
Westinghouse Solar has been granted an equity investment from CBD Energy; a partnership that will also see the companies mutually explore a wider strategic relationship. The investment saw Westinghouse Solar issue common stock at a price of US$0.60 per share for gross proceeds of US$1,000,000.
Lux Research’s latest Solar Demand Forecaster claims Portugal’s installations cap to be the most alluring in Europe to investors. The country’s internal rates of returns (IRR) for the six major solar technologies remain high in 2011 along with Cyprus and Greece, though the financial crisis in Europe could significantly hinder that market.
An end-of-year surge in the number of utility-scale PV installation in China and India will result in installed capacity for 2011 in the Asia-Pacific region reaching 4.8GW, according to the new Asia Pacific Major PV Markets Quarterly report from NPD Solarbuzz.
Significant price declines coupled with difficult project financing conditions, especially for large-scale PV projects in Europe, were key reasons behind Trina Solar reporting a net loss of US$31.5 million in the third quarter. Though module shipments reached 370MW in the quarter, slightly higher than previous guidance of 360MW at the high range figure, shipments declined 6.6% sequentially. Net revenues were US$481.9 million, a decrease of 16.8% sequentially and 5.2% year-over-year.
A concerted effort to increase sales overseas, though not a player in the expanding China market, SMA Solar Technology reported it had claimed back lost market share in the first 9-months of 2011. As part of the growing regional mix, product mix changed as SMA’s central inverter sales recorded strong growth. SMA reiterated recently lowered guidance for sales in 2011 to be between €1.5 billion to €1.7 billion and operating profit of €220 million to €300 million.
Capacity expansions are out, improving manufacturing line efficiencies and productivity is in, according to First Solar’s chairman Michael Ahearn, who took over the CEO role from ousted Rob Gillete last week. Capacity expansions had seen average module efficiencies rates increase modestly in 2011; on the downside, production cost per watt merely flat-lined. Almost unheard of was the fact that manufacturing line utilization rates had dipped below 100% as capacity outstripped demand. Back at the helm, Ahearn said that First Solar would re-focus on markets without energy subsidies such as the Middle East as well as markets with critical energy needs such as India, North Africa and China.
SunPower has launched the SunPower C7 Tracker, a solar PV tracking system that concentrates the sun's power seven times to achieve what is claimed to be the lowest levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) for utility-scale solar power plants available today.

Luc Graré, Senior VP of sales and marketing cells and modules at REC Solar, said, “We are very excited to recognize the strong commitment of our partners who have made a significant contribution to our sales and marketing activities over the last year".
Seraphim Solar System’s modules have passed the Italian Certification Authority’s ICIM (Istituto di Certificazione Industriale per la Meccanica) evaluation. ICIM’s assessment covered Seraphim’s entire management system and the certification will be a boon to the Changzhou-based firm’s hopes of establishing itself in Italy’s highly-competitive PV industry.
