We Energies breaks ground on three new Wisconsin renewables projects

US utility We Energies has begun construction on three renewable energy and battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in Wisconsin, US.

The three projects include a battery storage facility, a co-located solar project and BESS, and a 110 MW wind project. They had all been approved in advance by the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin.

Darien Battery Storage broke ground at the end of July. It is a 75MW BESS and will be part of the Darien Solar and Battery Park – which already has a 250MW solar PV project that began commercial operations in 2025.

Dawn Harvest Solar and Battery Park broke ground on a 150MW solar PV project with 50MW of battery storage in June. Meanwhile, construction of the Badger Hollow Wind Energy Centre began in July.

“These renewable energy projects are part of our strategy to strengthen reliability through a balanced mix of Wisconsin-based energy sources, including renewables and state-of-the-art natural gas plants,” said Mike Hooper, president of We Energies.

“In addition to helping meet growing electricity demand, the three projects will employ hundreds of workers with good-paying, union-first jobs.”

We Energies will be the majority owner of the three new renewable energy projects, with Wisconsin Public Service (WPS) and Madison Gas and Electric (MGE) as co-owners. Renewables developer Invenergy will handle construction of the sites, having already developed 17 renewable energy projects in the state.

Daniel Litchfield, senior vice president of development at Invenergy, added: “Bringing these projects into construction is an important milestone for Wisconsin’s energy future, especially in a moment when electricity demand is growing, and all energy sources are needed to meet it.”

“These projects not only deliver needed energy – they invest directly in local communities with new, good-paying jobs and consistent revenue.”

In total, We Energies currently has over 3 GW of solar PV and wind energy and 600MW of BESS in service, under construction, or awaiting regulatory approval across Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
