DuPont Performance Polymers has tailored its portfolio of thermoplastic materials and design knowledge to the needs of the photovoltaic industry, including the CPV and CSP sector. DuPont has developed two specific grades of ‘DuPont Rynite’ polyethylene terephtalate (PET) that are claimed to reduce the total cost of manufacturing, assembling and installing photovoltaic systems.

UPDATED: PV industry market leader First Solar reported third-quarter sales of US$797.9 million, a significant increase of second quarterly net sales of US$587.9 million, mainly due to the sale of the 60MW Sarnia Phase 2 utility project in Canada. The company noted that its CdTe thin-film module average selling prices (ASP) declined in the quarter, which impacted revenue figures.

However, one of the pioneering sites, which is backed by a core team of experienced PV project developers and Q-Cells cofounder and former CEO Anton Milner, is planning a 5MW crystalline-based plant in Bourn, Cambridge.

Despite the Japanese Government’s concerns over the legality of Ontario’s ‘local content’ feed-in tariff requirements, Sharp’s tandem-junction thin-film modules will be used by SunEdison for two solar parks, totalling 18.5MW, in Norfolk County, Ontario, Canada. The projects (SunE Sky Norfolk I and II) are a joint venture between SkyPower and the MEMC subsidiary, which actually started construction in March this year and is expected to be completed before year-end.

Update: A significant increase in production capacity of its leading-edge ‘Panda’ technology will help boost Yingli Green’s total PV production capacity pass 1.7GW by mid-2011. KG has developed a new inline wafer separation system suitable for separating mono- and polycrystalline wafers in all common formats with thicknesses of up to 120 µm. The new ecoSplit IXL has an output capacity of at least 3000 wafers per hour, and the especially gentle, patented separation technology makes it possible to reduce breakage rates to a low as 0.1%.

In its bid to expand capacity and become cost competitive with their rivals, AUO and SunPower’s Fab 3 facility in Malaysia has fabricated its first 100 solar cells, yielding a minimum conversion efficiency of 22.2%. Due to the successful initial run, the partners expect commercial production to ramp up later this year. Construction and manufacturing ramp at Fab 3 was reiterated is still expected to continue through 2013.

Long-term cooperation agreements could lead to equipment and project orders worth €2 billion for Gebr. Schmid and Schmid Silicon Technology after a delegation to China under the leadership of Germany’s Minster of Economics, Rainer Bruederle had been held. The agreements are expected to be made with Guodian Electronics Group, Sanmenxia Dijiu Mining and DMEGC Group, the company said.
