In the recently published eighth ‘Annual Photovoltaics Status Report’ the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) has reported a ‘massive’ increase in photovoltaics production capacity is underway and that worldwide production capacity for solar cells would exceed 38GW by the end of 2010. The report also notes that production volumes in 2008 increased by 80% as compared to 2007, reaching 7.3GW of potential output with China, Taiwan and Europe all adding significant capacity.
Product Briefing Outline: Sanyo has launched its highest efficiency ‘HIT’ N Series solar module to date using cells with 21.1% conversion efficiency, generating a module output of 235W for its new HIT-N235SE10 module. Module efficiency is 18.6%. The New N Series modules will be produced at Sanyo’s factory in Hungary with shipments commencing across Europe from September, 2010 onwards.
Advanced processing technology for c-Si solar cell production were put at the forefront of Roth & Rau's reported record new orders worth €347 million since the beginning of the year. The company noted that its next-generation ‘SiNA’ antireflective coating systems were a key part of its success, having so far this year sold the equivalent capacity of 1.85GWp, while the company has also received letters of intent for further SiNA systems with a total capacity of 1.45GWp. These systems are due for delivery in the second quarter of 2011.
A Chinese firm has placed an approximately €5 million purchase order with PVA TePla Danmark for float zone-based crystal-growing systems needed for high-purity, monocrystalline silicon rods, used in both the solar and semiconductor industries.
Product Briefing Outline: DuPont Performance Polymers (DuPont) have introduced ‘Zalak’ 5300 high-performance seals for photovoltaic cell manufacturing. Zalak 5300 seals bridge the performance gap between standard fluoroelastomers (FKM) and perfluoroelastomers (FFKM) seals. The seals are specially formulated for use in plasma environments, such as edge isolation, ARC coating in crystalline cell manufacturing, TCO sputtering deposition, and selective a-Si PECVD applications in PV cell manufacturing.
Although not citing confirmed orders from the recent EU PVSEC in Valencia, regarded by many suppliers to the PV manufacturing industry as the most important event each year, centrotherm photovoltaics has confirmed it is in advanced contract negotiations with well-known companies up and down the supply chain. centrotherm photovoltaics is the second largest equipment supplier in the sector, after Applied Materials.
Global solar inverter shipments are expected to surpass 23.3 million units by 2014, up by a factor of nine from 2.6 million in 2010, according to a new report from iSuppli Corp. Revenue will subsequently increase to US$8.9 billion in 2014, up from US$5.3 billion in 2010. This would result in solar inverters sales becoming one of the highest-volume ruggedized electronic systems sold, according to report author Greg Sheppard. Despite such soaring demand, the average price per watt for inverters worldwide will decline by 13.5% this year. In particular, Asian suppliers are trying to drive prices down with lower costs, Sheppard noted, even though they have been challenged to deliver bankability.
The global PV market is set to soar higher than previously expected, according to solar inverter market leader, SMA Solar Technology. As a result, the company has raised its revenue guidance for the year, the second time it has done so in 2010. SMA Solar now expects the global photovoltaics market to reach approximately 17GW of new installations in 2010 and with more than 40% of the inverter market, is guiding revenue of between €1.7 and €1.9 billion. Previously, SMA Solar had forecasted the PV market would reach 14GW and company revenue of €1.5 to €1.8 billion.
With a string of large orders announced and major capacity expansion plans continuing in the wafering sector, Mayer Burger - not surprisingly - posted strong first-half financial results for 2010. Sales increased by 67% to CHF 356.9 million with organic growth of 36% compared to the same period in 2009. Growth from previous M&A activities was 31%. New order bookings for the first six months stood at CHF 590.1 million, pushing the order backlog to CHF 770.0 million. Meyer Burger expects full-year sales to reach CHF 730 million, highlighting the potential for strong results in 2011.
