Trinasolar has announced that its industrial larger-area n-type total passivation (TOPAS) solar cell, based on heterojunction technology, has achieved an efficiency of 27.08%, setting a new record for front and back contact cells, confirmed by the Institute for Solar Energy Research in Hamelin, Germany. This is the first time that a crystalline silicon solar cell with front and back contact structure has achieved a front-side efficiency of above 27%.

“We are delighted with the feat our R&D team has been able to achieve,” commented company chairman and CEO Gao Jifan.  “Trina Solar’s commitment to its R&D efforts on the total passivation of solar cells and modules is stronger than ever, as we continue to improve their competitiveness.”
