Singaporean independent power producer (IPP) Levanta Renewables has begun construction of its Barotac Viejo solar-plus-storage project in the Philippines.

The project consists of a 166MW solar PV facility, co-located with an 80MWh battery energy storage system (BESS), to be built in the Visayas island group. Levanta said that it had reached financial close for the facility in June, securing finance from what it described as two “leading banks” earlier this year.

Development will be completed through Levanta subsidiary the Magallanes Solar Energy Corporation and the companies expect commercial operations at the project to begin in the second quarter of 2027.

“The Barotac Viejo Solar Power Project reflects the continued momentum of renewable energy development in the Philippines and demonstrates the important role of private sector investment in achieving our national energy objectives,” said Marissa P Cerezo, director of the Renewable Energy Management Bureau at the Philippines Department of Energy, who attended the project’s groundbreaking ceremony and spoke on behalf of Philippines energy secretary Sharon S Garin.

Levanta has already signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) to sell power generated at the Barotac project through the Fourth Round of the Green Energy Auction Program (GEA-4), which was completed by the Philippines government last November.

Levanta is owned by international sustainable infrastructure investor Actis, which has a number of other clean energy developers in its portfolio. These include US IPP Atlas Renewable Energy, which refinanced a US$3 billion solar-plus-storage portfolio earlier this year and the MTerra Solar project, which is being brought online in phases in the Philippines and, upon completion, will pair 3.5GW of solar PV capacity with 4.5GWh of batteries.

“We appreciate the support of the Department of Energy, the provincial government of Iloilo, the Municipality of Barotac Viejo, our project partners and the local community in reaching this important milestone,” added Levanta CEO Pramod Singh.
