Chinese PV mounting systems manufacturer Powerway has announced that it will work on a solar power project in Algeria that will total 233MW generation capacity when completed.
The company announced this morning that it will work on 120MW of the project’s total, providing photovoltaic mounting structures and participating in design. The 233MW total figure is comprised of 16 PV plants, across three separate sub-projects.

A subsidiary of Algeria’s national natural gas and electricity distribution company, Sonelgaz, is developing the plant. Powerway announced that construction began at the end of April and is expected to be completed by the end of this year. The company claims that it will be the largest solar project in the entire African region, when completed. According to Powerway, over 4.6 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions will be prevented each year by the completed project, with output of 372.8 million kWh.
The announcement marks the latest event in Powerway's involvement in the African PV market. At the beginning of the year the company announced a joint venture with JA Solar to establish a module assembly facility in South Africa. In March the company also partnered with SunGrow to open an inverter facility.
Algeria is considered rich in sunshine making it suitable for photovoltaics, but much of the country is desert, meaning that large projects are often favoured for the scale they offer.
