SMA Solar Technology has launched a next-generation microinverter that claims to have 50% less component content than competitor versions. The ‘Sunny Boy 240’ microinverter is billed to be easy-to-install and provides an expandable modular solution for PV systems.

Problem

Due to their mounting location, microinverters can be subject to much harsher environmental conditions than string inverters. This and the higher number of inverters per PV system means that a microinverter needs to provide much higher reliability.

Solution

The Sunny Boy 240 has been designed to provide high reliability and robustness through simplified module design. The company claims the device contains approximately 50% fewer components (a total of 176) than competitor products and is designed for easy plug-and-play installation and efficient system operation. Through Sunny Multigate, the interface to the utility grid, the Sunny Boy 240 also guarantees analysis, diagnostics and yield monitoring via Sunny Portal or locally via Sunny Explorer. Access to the SMA Online Portal comes as standard and offers an option for simplified servicing. For example, shading or module problems can be quickly identified and rectified. The microinverter is said to offer a low-cost entry point to self-generated electricity and therefore low-cost access to the energy transition.

Applications

Particular use for partial shading, complex roof structures, extremely small systems or combinations of different roof orientations.

Platform

Sunny Boy 240 is designed for easy installation and connection due to the ready-made, easily identifiable plugs, pre-assembled AC cables and choice of DC adapters. A separate MPP tracker for each module ensures optimum yields, even with moving shadows. Max. DC power (@ cos φ = 1) 245W. Max. efficiency/CEC efficiency 95.9%/96%.

Availability

February 2014 onwards, initially available in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France and Benelux.
