Better than expected revenue figures have been reported by aleo solar, though previously guided losses of €25-€30 million are still expected for the full-year 2011, according to the company. aleo solar had previously guided revenue to be in the region of €440 million but this has been raised to €462 million, down 17% compared to 2010 revenue of €554 million.

Announced in conjunction with the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi, cadmium-telluride (CdTe) thin film leader, First Solar has achieved a new total area efficiency record for its standard-sized modules of 14.4%. NREL was said to have confirmed the record, which was previously held by First Solar at 13.4%. Actual volume production of modules with efficiencies between 14.5-15%, are expected in 2015. First Solar reached volume production of modules with an efficiency of 11.7% in 2011.

Having placed greater emphasis on its project business as part of its restructuring efforts, MEMC, via its subsidiary, SunEdison, is reported to be planning a major move to become a key project developer in Japan. The reports claim that the company is in discussions with provincial authorities for PV projects totalling 1GW with an investment of US$4.6 billion over a 5-year period.

Citing an intensely competitive market environment, SMA Solar Technology, the leading PV inverter manufacturer, reported preliminary full-year financial results of €1.7 billion in sales for 2011. SMA Solar had previously cut €200 million from its previous forecast of €1.9 billion to €1.7 billion, with results therefore coming in at the lowered figure. SMA Solar reported 2010 sales of €1.9 billion. Earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) were reported as being more than €240 million.

The first major renewable energy auction in Africa, undertaken by the Energy Department of South Africa saw Gestamp Solar, photovoltaic solar division of Gestamp Renewables win the opportunity to build 2 PV projects with a total power of 30MW in Northern Cape, South Africa.

The tragic death of Amonix CEO Brian Robertson late last year has led to Jan van Dokkum, an executive with venture capital firm, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, becoming interim CEO of the concentrated photovoltaic (CPV) solar systems company. The Board of Directors at Amonix said it had enlisted an executive search firm and has established a search committee for the selection and appointment of a new CEO.

Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) said it had added more than 220MW of wind and solar power to its generation mix in 2011, while signing contracts for future delivery of 463MW of new renewable power. PG&E deployed 185MW of solar power in 2011 and said it had secured signed contracts for 200 MW of new solar power in coming years.

As the Middle-East becomes an emerging solar market, more companies are set to seek business opportunities in the region. PV wholesaler and project developer, Antaris Solar is latest to announce it has opened trading posts in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Qatar. Antaris Solar already operates in Italy, France, the United Kingdom and the USA.

SolarWorld is planning to expand its fight against China-based solar module rivals currently being played out in the US to Europe. According to reports from German publication, Handelsblatt and reported by various news agencies, SolarWorld’s CEO, Frank Asbeck was said to be seeking support from other European-based companies to take an anti-dumping case to the European Commission’s competition agency.

The record PV installation figures of 7.5GW for Germany in 2011 have two separate leading market research firms agreeing on total new PV installations topping 26GW for the year, around a 50% increase of 2011 installations of over 17.5GW. Both IHS iSuppli and IMS Research feel confident that 2011 will be another record year for the industry.
