Chinese construction company the Shanxi Installation Group has selected Spanish engineering consultancy IDOM to design its 500MW Al Kamil I Solar Project in Oman.
IDOM will define the initial site studies and provide detailed designs of the proposed solar plant, which is part of Oman’s strategy to increase the share of renewable energy in its power generation mix and advance its long-term sustainability objectives.

The company said that it has provided engineering services for several Spanish PV plants with a total capacity of over 250MW, including feasibility studies; engineering, technical and financial due diligence; and permitting management.
The Shanxi collaboration will also not be IDOM’s first work outside of Spain; construction company Engie Energía Perú contracted the firm to provide engineering services during the planning, design and construction phases of its 40MW Intipampa PV power plant in Moquegua, Peru.
Oman has seen a surge in gigawatt-scale solar procurement in the last two years, most notably the commissioning this year of the Manah Phase I & II solar projects, with a combined capacity of 1GW.
These projects are a key part of the government’s goal for renewable energy to account for 30% of domestic electricity generation by 2030, and the state-run Nama Power and Water Procurement company launched a tender process in June to add a further 1.5GW of new solar capacity. This tender includes a hybrid solar PV and battery energy storage system (BESS)—the Adam project—which will be among the first hybrid PV generators in the country.
