Calisolar is morphing into a polysilicon producer with a name change that better reflects its future ambitions. Renamed, Silicor Materials Inc, the company has bagged a major supply deal for its purified silicon metal material with the PV industries largest module producer, Suntech Power Holdings.

Bloomberg is reporting the Energy Conversion Devices (ECD) has struck a deal with Baraclit, an Italian building-material company, which will integrate ECD’s solar products into its roofing materials. No details on compensation or the amount of materials to be supplied were revealed.

ET Solar advised that on March 20, at Ecobuild 2012, it will debut its new high-efficiency Moly PV module series. The PV modules use the new mono-like cell technology, quasi-mono cell, which are said to achieve conversion efficiencies up to 18.2% and contain a lower amount of oxygen than traditional monocrystalline cells.

Significant booking reductions from customers in the PV manufacturing sector impacted revenue at Ferro Corporation in 2011. The materials provider reported net sales of US$443 million in the fourth quarter, down 18% from net sales of US$537 million in the fourth quarter of 2010.

Cell efficiencies of higher than 18% using quasi-mono wafers have been claimed by Taiwan-based cell producer, Gintech Energy. To be displayed at PV EXPO 2012 in Japan in March, Gintech also said its optimized pattern design and process recipe has achieved cell efficiencies of 19% for its Douro Series monocrystalline solar cells and more than17% for its multicrystalline solar cells.

The Coalition for Affordable Solar Energy (CASE) announced GT Advanced Technologies and REC Silicon have been welcomed into the fold. The US-based companies will be joining the cause against the Coalition for American Solar Manufacturers (CASM) who claims Chinese manufacturers are trading unfairly.

Bio-based PV module backsheet developer, BioSolar claims that a customer is preparing a batch of solar panels with its ‘BioBacksheet’ material for full panel recertification by Underwriter's Laboratories (UL). In March, 2011 the company announced it was supplying sample material for PV module manufacturers based in Asia for evaluation.

Applied Materials’ Varian VIISta ion implant platform will be using Praxair Electronics’ UpTime sub-atmospheric dopant gas delivery system. Praxair Electronics noted that it is also the preferred sub-atmospheric dopant supplier for the Solion implant tool developed by Varian Semiconductor Equipment.

Hydro One Networks, NEC and ON Semiconductor have joined Semiconductor Research Corporation’s (SRC) global Energy Research Initiative (ERI) joining established members such as Applied Materials, Bosch, First Solar and IBM. The now 10 member ERI will continue to focus on finding new materials, devices and methodologies for power control/management and energy collection, conversion and storage.
