SEG Solar has announced the signing of a contract with Indonesia’s PT Kawasan Industri Terpadu Batang (KITB) for the lease of some 41 hectares of land located in the Batang Regency area of the Central Java region for a term of 80 years. The company plans to invest a total of $500 million to develop the land for construction of a cell and module manufacturing facility with a respective capacity of 5GW and 3GW, partnering with the ATW Group for local development of the project.
The cell production line will supply SEG’s US module factory in Houston, Texas and guarantee the capability to fully trace components within its supply chain. The company will cooperate with other PV suppliers for wafers, ingots, junction boxes, frames and EVA film to establish manufacturing facilities in Indonesia, paving the way for business development across the entire PV value chain.
CEO Jim Wood explained: “The country offers a supportive environment with favourable policies and taxation benefits and also has abundant resources of silicon.”
Antonius Weno, founder and chairman of the ATW Group, added: “SEG’s world-class manufacturing experience and financial commitment will upscale Indonesian involvement in the renewable energy industry’s global supply chain.”
Bahlil Lahadalia, Indonesia’s Minister for Investment, concluded: “This investment will create more than 2,000 jobs for the people of Indonesia and significantly contribute to the economic growth of the Batang region. The Indonesian government is fully committed to providing tax support, aiming to foster a mutually beneficial outcome.”
The facility is scheduled for completion in Q2 2024 and will be one of Indonesia’s largest solar cell and module factories.
