With Brazil upgrading its solar safety regulations, rapid shutdown functionality has become a mandatory feature for residential, commercial and industrial rooftop PV systems. During the 2025 edition of Intersolar South America, Sungrow unveiled its PV rapid shutdown solution, tailored for the Brazilian market.

The solution, consisting of an SR20D-M rapid shutdown (RSD) device, SR200T-BX RSD controller box and Sungrow inverters, ensures system safety by reducing module voltage to a safe level within 30 seconds, providing reliable protection for both individuals and property.

According to Brazil’s newly released standard, rooftop PV systems must lower DC voltage below 35 V within 30 seconds in case of utility power outages, fires or other emergencies. Previously, the country’s fire authority also emphasized the importance of rapid shutdown devices, urging the industry to enhance emergency response capability.

Sungrow’s new rapid shutdown solution ensures that rooftop arrays quickly enter a safe zone,  creating a safe environment for emergency crews and maintenance teams.

In rooftop systems, if a panel is heavily shaded or develops a fault, shutdown devices activate a bypass mode, allowing the faulty panel to be isolated while the rest of the system keeps generating power.

The problem with conventional designs is that, during bypass, device temperatures can reach  180–190°C. This extreme heat goes well beyond the safe limit of electronic components, which leads to faster aging, seal failures or even cracks in the casing. Over time, that shortens a system’s lifespan and raises the risk of malfunctions.

Sungrow solves this issue with its patented Fault Heat Control (FHC) low-temperature bypass technology, which keeps the temperature under 120°C, about 33% lower than conventional solutions.

To handle Brazil’s diverse climates the devices feature C5 anti-corrosion protection and the industry’s leading IP68 rating (IP68 for SR20D-M, IP65 for SR200T-BX).

“The rapid shutdown solution makes every solar module safer with simplified installation and maintenance throughout its lifecycle, reinforcing Sungrow’s position as a trusted contributor in the renewable energy industry,” commented VP for the Americas, Ada Li.
