Nextnova plans 2GW solar cell manufacturing in Oklahoma

US-based solar cell manufacturer Nextnova Solar has unveiled plans to build a 2GW solar cell manufacturing facility in the US state of Oklahoma.

The company expects to inaugurate the facility later this year in November and begin mass production in March 2027, with the possibility of expanding the annual nameplate capacity to 5GW at the same facility.

Details on the new facility were outlined on a LinkedIn post, which was in turn promoted by executives from US-based module manufacturer, Thornova. When contacted by PV Tech, a spokesperson for Thornova said: “Nextnova is a separate company and not a subsidiary of Thornova Solar. However, Thornova Solar is a close partner to Nextnova and one of their first buyers.”

PV Tech has reached out to Nextnova for additional comments on the new facility, and will update this article with any new information. A newly launched website for Nextnova provides no additional details about the company’s activities beyond the LinkedIn post.

“Nextnova is being built to deliver more than high-efficiency solar cells,” said Nathan Miller, Chief Strategy Officer at Nextnova. “We are creating a manufacturing platform that gives customers greater confidence through advanced technology, rigorous quality systems and complete transparency across the supply chain.”

Cell production in the US has become a key area of supply chain activity this year. While annual module nameplate capacity in the US has quickly grown over the past two years, available domestic solar cell capacity still remains scarce in the US. As covered earlier this month, our colleagues at PV Tech Research forecast that by 2027, there will be 96GW of annual module nameplate capacity versus a little bit over 50GW for solar cells. New solar cell capacity announcements, such as Nextnova’s, will help reduce the gap between module and solar cell nameplate capacity in the US.

A recent report from clean energy financing platform Crux highlighted that investment in solar manufacturing increased by 30% between the first and second quarters of 2026 to US$893 million. At the same time, new manufacturing project announcements increased on a quarterly basis, with a valuation of US$10 billion, the highest value in announced projects reported since the first quarter of 2024.
