Renewable energy and, specifically, the integration of photovoltaics in residential development will play an important role in the context of global sustainability and resource conservation. Just like EPIA outlines in its Solar Europe Industry Initiative (SEII) plan (2010-2012), as distributed PV and other renewable energy technologies mature, they can provide a significant share of European electricity demand. However, as their market share grows, concerns about potential impacts on the stability and operation of the electricity grid may create barriers to their future expansion. Additionally, low-cost, high-quality integration of PV in buildings and other objects poses major development challenges. The goal of the SEII is to unlock the potential for making PV a mainstream energy source, with special attention on aspects of system integration.

Interconnection of inverters to the electrical grid is a key issue for the widespread integration of distributed energy resources, especially when the scenario surrounding international standards is so unclear. As a pre-normative research step, a round-robin test of two small-scale photovoltaic inverters was performed by nine DERlab laboratories during 2009. The test activity was focused on the verification of individual test procedures, common interpretation of standards and requirements, and determination of problems related to the equipment and facilities involved in conducting round-robin tests. Compilation of test results and first conclusions of this activity will be presented in this paper.

The current feed-in tariff (FiT) scheme in Italy has so far resulted in a total installed PV capacity just above 600MWp. The majority of those installations (77%) are building-adapted (BAPV) or building-integrated (BIPV) thanks to the higher incentives provided compared to non-integrated ground-mounted plants. Moreover, there are special premiums on top of the basic FiT, such as when asbestos roofings are replaced with PV modules. On the one hand, this makes the Italian PV market very attractive for those players specialized in roof applications, while on the other, it represents an opportunity and a strong motivation for both the installers and the manufacturers to explore innovative and standardized BIPV solutions and materials. Will this trend continue in the years to come?

To date, the United States’ photovoltaic markets have largely been driven by net-metered residential and commercial customer projects, in large part due to federal, state, and utility incentives (see Fig. 1). The rapid growth of the commercial market in particular can almost entirely be attributed to the development of the well-known ‘solar-services’ business model, also known as the solar performance or the third-party solar model, which began in the early 2000s. In short, the commercial solar market surpassed the residential sector, and in 2008 represented only 10% of the number of installations but well over two-thirds of the annual grid-connected megawatts in the U.S. PV market [1]. This article will provide background information on the U.S. solar markets, and define what a utility solar business model is and the drivers of different model types.

Building integrated PV | Despite plenty of hype, BIPV has remained a niche segment in the solar business, held back by a combination of high costs and low efficiencies. But as Ben Willis hears, the high-profile entry of Tesla on to the BIPV scene could herald the start of a new era for the sector. In late October, with all the usual fanfare that accompanies an Elon Musk announcement, the CEO of EV and battery storage manufacturer, Tesla, took to the stage to lift the lid on a heavily trailed new product. Most of Musk’s recent utterances on energy have been about storage, particularly Tesla’s high-profile foray into the world of stationary storage through its Powerwall battery system. But this was something a bit different – a buildingintegrated PV (BIPV) product designed to emulate various kinds of roofing tile and eliminate the need for clunky conventional roof-mounted modules once and for all.

Building-integrated photovoltaics or BIPV is one form of solar electricity that looks set to dominate the solar market in the coming years. The increase in BIPV installations is already evident in some European countries as governments begin to tweak their policies in order to provide a platform for this technology. The past few months have seen countries such as France and Italy make efforts to up the installation rate of this integrated form of solar, increasing the feed-in tariff (FiT) rate quite substantially for BIPV and lowering it for the more common installations such as roof and ground-mounted systems in order to increase the uptake. This BIPV-dedicated section will focus on the new policies implemented in France and Italy, concentrating on France’s policies as a blueprint for others. It will provide a focus on why governments are so keen to increase incentives in favour of BIPV and what the future implications of this market shift will be.

Thin-film module production has proven itself as a forerunner in the race to drive down costs for photovoltaics. The type of semiconductor material used is the most differentiating factor for thin-film photovoltaics, playing the decisive role for determining which core processes are employed and what type of equipment is used. This explains why discussions related to thin-film costs and technologies usually focus on the semiconductor type. However, the effects of glass production, processing and handling are often underestimated: factors such as scaling, yield, unit cost and total cost of ownership of the equipment are defined by the glass-production side of the industry. This paper discusses the challenges faced in glass washing and handling in thin-film PV production.

Armed with the aim of generating a knowledge base on CPV technology, ISFOC has installed 1.4MW of CPV and is executing up to a total of 3MW of power plants incorporating seven different technologies, all scheduled for completion in 2009. These pilot plants are being established to assist the industry in the setting up of pilot production lines and to obtain very valuable information such as reliability, suitability and production [1]. Rating measurement approaches have been proposed by ISFOC, but there remains a need for an international standard that is accepted by the CPV community. This paper presents ISFOC’s proposed standards set and outlines the methodology adopted by the company in this respect.

Power quality and reliability are two very important factors in electrical power supply, particularly for specific branches of industry. Multifunctional PV battery systems can improve power quality, substitute uninterruptible power supply systems, and can offer additional services such as energy management and peak shaving. This article presents the results of an analysis of possible services under current German conditions and the measurement results of laboratory tests and a pilot demonstration.

With the ever-growing challenge of remaining financially viable in today’s economic climate, some companies in the PV industry are adapting and applying the structures and principals of project finance to the photovoltaic assets. The purpose of project finance is to create a business structure which brings together multiple entities, aligns their interests, and allocates the project’s inputs and outputs (i.e. risks and rewards) in such a way that the overall benefits derived from the project are maximized.
