3S Photovoltaics, a division of Meyer Burger Technology, Sputnik Engineering and BE Netz have partnered for the development of Switzerland’s Umwelt Arena. Located in the town of Spreitenbach, near Zurich, the building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) project covers over 57,048 square feet of the arena’s rooftop and holds the possibility of generating 540,000kWh of solar energy every year.
3S Swiss Solar Systems will supply 5,239 solar laminates, which will be installed on 33 differently angled roof sections. BE Netz will oversee the system’s installation, while Sputnik Engineering will provide its SolarMax inverters for the project. The Umwelt Arena solar project will use various 3S Photovoltaics’ solar technology including its MegaSlate solar roof system.

The companies note that this is first solar project of its type in Switzerland. The Umwelt Arena’s focus is to make environmental engineering and sustainable living practices a possibility for its visitors. The three companies, with additional partners, have all agreed to design an exhibit on BIPV technology to further educate visitors of the arena. Completion for the project is set for spring 2012.
