Chart of US-based inverter manufacturing capacity by HQ location
European-headquartered companies will account for nearly half of the annual nameplate capacity for US-based inverter manufacturing in 2027. Chart: PV Tech Research.

Welcome to the PV Chart of the Week from our colleagues at PV Tech Research. This week, we look at trends in the country of origin of companies producing inverters on US soil.

From the beginning of the decade until 2024, the majority of inverters made on US soil were produced by US-headquartered companies, though total nameplate capacity was less than 20GW.

Data from PV Tech Research’s latest InverterTech Bankability Ratings Report forecasts that the US will surpass 40GW of annual nameplate inverter production capacity by the end of 2026 and reach 60GW by the end of 2027.

The rapid increase in 2026 and 2027 will be primarily driven by Europe-headquartered companies. As shown in the chart, these companies will account for the highest share across all regions, with nearly half of the total annual nameplate capacity.

Earlier this month, Mollie McCorkindale, senior analyst at PV Tech Research, highlighted that “the US is experiencing a substantial ramp-up in PV inverter and PCS [power conversion system] manufacturing capacity.”

McCorkindale added that some European inverter manufacturers were in the process of increasing their US inverter manufacturing footprint (subscription required), including Germany-based SMA Solar Technology and Spain-based Power Electronics.

Outside of Europe and US-headquartered companies, only two companies have US-based inverter manufacturing. These are Japan’s TMEIC’s 9GW facility – which began production in February 2025 – and Israel’s SolarEdge.

The state of the US solar supply chain will be explored in detail at our annual PV CellTech USA conference in San Francisco on 13-14 October 2026. For full agenda and booking details, click the link above.
