The Murfreesboro Solar Project has not broken ground yet, but that has not stopped GreenCo Solutions and the North Carolina Electric Membership Corporation (NCEMC) from announcing their intent to buy renewable energy certificates (REC) and electricity, respectively, from the solar project that Duke Energy acquired from SunPower in December 2010.

SunPower has designed and will construct the solar PV system using 20,000 of its high-efficiency crystalline silicon solar panels on SunPower T0 Tracker technology. The 6.4MW (DC) solar project is expected to break ground this spring outside of Raleigh, NC and be built over 37 acres, reaching completion by the end of the year.

“Duke Energy Renewables is committed to helping our valued customers incorporate renewable energy into their long-term plans,” said Greg Wolf, president of Duke Energy Renewables. “Through this power purchase agreement, GreenCo and NCEMC's member cooperatives have locked in renewable energy certificates and a supply of affordable, zero-emissions electricity for decades to come.”

GreenCo Solutions will procure all RECs produced by the solar facility to help its members achieve their solar power requirements as stated under North Carolina’s Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Portfolio Standard. GreenCo agreed to a 20-year purchase agreement with Duke Energy Renewables, part of Duke Energy’s unregulated, commercial business.

Furthermore, NCEMC will obtain the electricity produced by the solar project under a 20-year agreement.
