Two of IKEA’s German stores have recently been fitted with solar installations and connected to the grid thanks to the partnership between the home furnishing company and REC Solar. IKEA selected REC Solar out of 200 solar installation providers, who then provided the modules and installed the solar systems on IKEA’s store roofs.

The Regensburg store was connected to the grid in September 2010 with the installation covering 0.83 acres of rooftop space. The 430kW installation is expected to produce 449,000kWh of solar energy for the store per year. IKEA’s second installation was on its Freiburg store. The 150kW rooftop installation, connected to the grid in December, envelops 0.32 acres of space and will generate 149,000kWh of electricity per year.

“We will use the solar power produced for our lighting department and furniture exhibition, as well as for the customer restaurant”, says Michael Armin, head of expansion at IKEA Germany.

In addition to the German IKEA installations REC Solar has completed, the company is currently providing modules for four U.S.-based IKEA stores. Two installations will be located at stores on the East Coast, one in Southern California and a recently announced installation in Colorado.
