Concentrator photovoltaics developer SolFocus will partner with Vision Electro Mechanical to build the first commercial CPV power plant in Saudi Arabia. The initial project will be the initial project in a series of Saudi solar power stations planned by Vision (a subsidiary of Construction Projects Holding Co. [CPC]).

Hareon Solar has selected Applied Materials' SmartFactory manufacturing automation software with the aim of improving productivity across Hareon's solar photovoltaic cell manufacturing operations in China. The company will install Applied's software at its cell subsidiaries Jiangyin Hareon Solar Technology and Altusvia Energy.

A recurring theme in 2010 has been upward revisions on a quarterly basis to product shipments from the major PV manufacturers as demand continues to remain strong, despite rapid capacity expansion plans. With the third quarter financial season looming, JA Solar has revised guidance for its third quarter results.

Adding to its 27GW of firing furnace production orders to date, Despatch Industries has been tapped for an undisclosed number of metallization firing furnaces by LDK Solar, who will use the equipment in its most recent expansion projects plans. Despatch has experienced huge demand from Chinese companies in particular of late.

MKS Instruments has been awarded a contract from a major Chinese solar cell manufacturer for the supply of its new RF power supplies and matching networks, as well as a quantity of vacuum related products. Shipments are scheduled to begin in late December this year and will continue through early 2011.

Ascent Solar Technologies has agreed to collaborate with GlobalWatt on a joint development for the production of new adaptable and retractable solar modules. The companies hope to develop a solar module that will last longer and then be able to recharge in a shorter amount of time while delivering optimal power.

Suntech and Calisolar have signed a letter of intent to construct a solar silicon manufacturing facility in Ontario, Canada, in order to significantly expand the existing manufacturing operations in Vaughan. The plant will add new operators and engineers, doubling total employment at Calisolar's wholly owned subsidiary, 6N Silicon, to more than 350.

According to the latest report from IMS Research, the utility-scale PV market is set to surge in 2011, growing as much as five times faster than the rest of the industry. This high demand predicted for next year supports First Solar's recent decision to make significant increases to its production capacity expansion plans for the next two years, suggesting that the dominating thin-film supplier's production capacity will reach over 2.7GW by the end of 2012 at current line run rates. However, given its history of improving throughput, IMS Research estimates that its capacity could in fact reach over 3GW by then.

5N Plus Corp was given US$500,000 in funding from the State Energy Program of Wisconsin, which will go towards purchasing equipment for the facilitation of the plants solar module recycling and creation of new jobs in DeForest, Wisconsin. The 60,500 square foot facility has a US$4 million investment behind it and is expected to be operational in the next few weeks. Along with its recycling capability, it will also be manufacturing specialty compounds for thin-film PV applications.

Iosil Energy has leased a 30,700 square foot facility from Meritex in Groveport, Ohio, as the location for its pilot manufacturing of high purity polysilicon.
