NV Energy and American Capital Energy (ACE) announced a long-term power purchase agreement to divvy the sales of energy produced from 20MW (DC) solar power plant that to be constructed by mid-2010 near Searchlight, Nevada, 55 miles south of Las Vegas. Other terms of the power purchase agreement were not disclosed.

Troubled solar materials supplier Timminco has ratified and approved the terms of a new collective bargaining deal with its hourly workforce at the company's Becancour, Quebec, facilities. More than 93% of the unionized employees, who are represented by the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada, Local 184, voted in favor of the new terms, which will apply for five years ending in April 2013.

After a slow start, this year’s PV Industry Forum, the traditional opening conference of Intersolar Week in Munich, finally got going during the last session of the day with a resounding call to action from none other than Q-Cells’ boss, Anton Milner. The conference opened with the usual slides and the usual suspects giving their views of the overall solar market. The obligatory emerging market was given lip service--this time it was India--while the rest of the presentations mostly failed to engage the audience in a meaningful way. Things changed during the afternoon....

Spire has signed up three new companies to represent the solar equipment and turnkey line manufacturer's interests in various parts of the globe: Servo Dynamics in China, Energy Control Systems for Pakistan, and PV Middle East for the Gulf Arab States, including Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates."

SMA Solar Technology AG has reported a 25% decline in first quarter sales compared to the same period in 2008. The solar inverter leader said that it didn’t rule out a decline in global demand for PV system in 2009 but expects an increase in sales of at least 65% to about €145 to€165 million in the second quarter. Sales in the first quarter totalled €86.7 million compared to €115.1 million in 2008.

Intertech Pira, organisers of the Photovoltaics Summit Europe 2009, to be held at the Crowne Plaza Rome in St Peter’s, Rome from June 30th to July 2nd, has announced its speaker line-up for the event. The Summit will be focused on the European PV markets and will include a half-day pre-conference workshop led by Daniela Schreiber and Markus Wackerbeck from EuPD Research.

At a two day event held in Atlantis, Palm Jumeirah, Dubai, Mr. Sultan bin Sulayem, Chairman of Dubai World (pictured), announced the establishment of a photovoltaics manufacturing company, dubbed Solar Technologies FZE, which will build and operate a 130MW production plant in Dubai’s Technopark. Future plans include establishing manufacturing facilities in China, Mexico and Bulgaria, which will increase the total production capacity to 1GW by 2015.

Independent photovoltaic power producer, SOLARIG has recently completed all of its PV power plant projects in Spain, ahead of the expiration of the current Royal Decree. A total power capacity of 22MW of planned energy production at a cost of €132 million has been successfully connected, the company said.
