Building work on the largest privately-held PV system in Florida is close to completion as Sybac Solar adds the final touches to its 2MW array in Gainesville.
The U.S. Department of Energy has made a conditional commitment of a loan guarantee worth up to $967 million for the 290MW (AC) Agua Caliente solar PV farm, located on 2400 acres of former agricultural land site east of Yuma, AZ. Preliminary construction on the site has begun, with the first electricity expected to be produced later this year or early 2012. The entire project is scheduled for completion in 2014.
In a blow to homegrown U.S. solar manufacturing, Intel spinoff SpectraWatt will be laying off most of its workforce and possibly closing down operations, according to published reports. The crystalline-silicon PV cell manufacturer will let more than 100 employees go starting in March of next year and may shutter its less-than-year-old factory located in IBM’s Hudson Research Park in Hopewell Junction, NY.
The Tucson Airport Authority (TAA) and Tucson Electric Power (TEP) will be coming together for a second time since 2007 for the installation of a solar energy project. TAA’s board of directors approved a 20-year land lease with TEP, where TEP will pay a fixed rental rate of US$46,716.50 per year to lease 50 acres of land south of the Tucson International Airport.
Good Energies and NIBC Infrastructure Partners have signed an agreement with Q-Cells SE for the acquisition of Finsterwalde II and Finsterwalde III, the solar photovoltaics plants located in Brandenburg, Germany. Together with Q-Cells' Finsterwalde I, which stands adjacent, the three Finsterwalde projects have a capacity of 81MWp, forming the largest operational solar PV plant in the world.

Solyndra has signed an EPC agreement with Photon Energy, which will see the installation and development of 18 rooftop PV systems in Prague for a total of 1.23MWp. Installations have already begun with Novacento securing the authorization to install the solar projects on the roofs of municipal buildings; mainly schools and nurseries.
Once the agreement is finalized and the governmental incentives approved, a former strip-mining site next to a nature conservancy in southeastern Ohio will host what will be one of the largest solar PV power plants in North America. American Electric Power Ohio has signed a memorandum of understanding with New Harvest Ventures and Agile Energy for a 20-year power purchase agreement for the electricity generated by the 49.9MW Turning Point Solar project. In a related deal, Spanish solar manufacturers Prius Energy and Isofoton will set up factories in the region and supply components for the array.
Sharp Electronics has confirmed its supply agreement for the 58MW (DC) (45MW AC) Avenal photovoltaic solar power facility, located in Central California. Once complete, the three plant project will be the largest in the state, supplying renewable energy to PG&E under 20-year power purchase agreements approved by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC).
