Empower Energies, a renewable energy company, has completed the installation of four PV arrays at the General Motors Warren Technical Center campus in Warren, Michigan, US.

The installations comprise a 49kW ground-mounted system and three solar canopies for the charging of electric vehicles. The 49kW system is located on the north side of the centre and, according to Empower Energies, is currently generating more energy than anticipated.

The electric vehicle charging stations enable GM employees who own a Chevy Volt vehicle to charge their vehicles at work.

“These EV charging stations may be small in stature by today's solar-industry standards,” said Len Jornlin, Empower Energies’s CEO, “but they represent a huge commitment to clean transport infrastructure, and our ability to scale the technology domestically and abroad using our expertise and extensive relationships, including strategic partners such as China Triumph International Engineering Company.”

The installations are in line with GM’s goal of consuming more renewable energy. Rob Threlkeld, GM’s renewable energy manager, said: “General Motors is committed to promoting the use of 125MW of renewable energy by 2020, which includes solar installations. As the leading automotive user of solar power, we understand the importance of solar projects like this, and we continue to work with companies such as Empower Energies to activate new projects at our facilities around the globe.”
