Chinese PV project developer Sky Solar has connected its 30MW PV facility located in the city of Alar in the Akesu region in Xinjiang province, China.
The facility represents the first phase of a larger 200MW project which will be developed by Sky Solar. According to the company, the 30MW plant has become one of the first grid-connected large-scale PV power stations in Xinjiang and also the first and largest in the Akesu region.

The remaining 170MW is slated to complete and connect to the grid by the end of this year.
President of Sky Solar China Li Xiaojun commented: “With the support and assistance from all levels of government here in Xinjiang in relation to the PV industry, we believe that the local PV industry will really begin to grow soon.
“Sky Solar will spare no effort in the investment and construction of large scale ground mounted PV power stations in Xinjiang, and will assemble the necessary resources throughout the group to strengthen the quality management of power station systems by selecting excellent EPC partners and by introducing international first-class engineering technologies.”
Xinjiang province offers excellent natural resources for generating solar energy with irradiance levels on average of more than 2,500 per hour. In some instances, the province has seen irradiance levels of above 3,500 per hour.
According to Sky Solar, “these levels are the second highest in China and together with the vast and extensive land on offer make it, and the Gobi desert, an ideal location for the development of large-scale PV power stations”.
Xinjiang province is a key region for Sky Solar’s strategy for the implementation of large-scale ground mounted PV power stations. To date, the company has several projects in the pipeline for the region including a 100MW project that commenced construction in 2012.
