Constellation Energy will build, own and maintain a 5.38MW rooftop solar installation at Toys R Us’s distribution centre in Flanders, New Jersey. The system, said to be the largest of its kind in the US, will be connected to the grid this summer and all the electricity generated will be purchased by the toy store under a 20-year power purchase agreement.

With 37,389 Uni-Solar amorphous-silicon thin-film laminates and an annual electricity-generating capacity of 6.4 million kWh, Toys R Us’s system will be the largest customer-sited, rooftop solar installation in the US upon its completion, thus helping reduce the 1.3 million-square-foot distribution centre’s carbon dioxide emissions by 4,569 tonnes.

“This system is a great example of how Constellation collaborates with our existing energy customers to provide additional value-added products and services,” said Constellation Energy’s senior vice president of green initiatives, Michael Smith. “By combining solar with other environmentally-responsible energy choices, such as energy conservation measures and renewable energy certificates, Constellation customers can further green their energy use and minimise costs.”

“Uni-Solar laminates are the most lightweight solar product available on the market globally, and they are a perfect fit for the Toys R Us rooftop,” said John Williams, vice president of strategic accounts for United Solar. “It has been a pleasure to work with Constellation Energy and Toys R Us on the largest solar rooftop installation in the US.”
