International renewable energy producers, Enel Green Power (EGP), has completed two new photovoltaic plants in Salerno Province, Italy.

The two PV plants, one in Borgo San Lazzaro and one in Spineto (Campania), have a total installed capacity of 21MW and will be linked to the EGP network in Serre Persano in Salerno, south of Naples.

The new plants are expected to generate up to 30 million kWh per year, enough to power 15,000 households.

The two plants were built on two lots of Italian Army land. The two lots totalled 190 hectares and were assigned to EGP in November 2011 by the Defence Services, the in-house expenditure management of the Italian Ministry of Defence.

Both plants have been built using thin-film panels manufactured at 3Sun’s Catania factory. 3Sun was founded in 2006 as a joint venture between EGP, Sharp and STMicroelectronics, for manufacturing specialist PV panels.

The two plants will join EGP’s first solar plant in Salerno. Built in 1993, its capacity was doubled in 2011; EGP claims the 1993 plant to have been the largest in Europe at the time.

EGP also operate in the Americas and generated 25 billion kWh from renewable sources in 2012.
