Solar giant JA Solar has formed a joint venture with the Chilean subsidiary of German developer Soventix to develop large-scale PV projects in the Latin American country.
Both companies are targeting the country and Latin America in general, and state that they see “clear advantages” in working together towards a “more rapid penetration” of the market.

The JV will initially focus on projects in the country with a combined capacity of 130MW, and the first collaborative projects are due to come on line later this year.
Soventix had previously outlined plans to construct a 50MW array in Cachyuyo, Atacama, which it is expected to complete in October this year should it receive approval from the Chilean authorities.
The 130MW pipeline will use JA Solar modules and Soventix Chile CEO Thomas Setter said the company was “pleased” to partner with the tier one supplier.
“Having a technically and economically strong module supplier enables us to move rapidly into the detailed engineering stage of our projects, as well as progressing in raising capital,” Setter said.
Jian Xie, president at JA Solar, said the deal formed part of its market entry strategy which sees the firm participate in the “earliest stages of project development”.
“This enables us to secure supply agreements early on, as well as to be influential in the project implementation and not act simply as a vendor,” he said.
