Iberdrola in fresh PV play with 250MW submitted for approval in central Spain

Spanish developer and utility Iberdrola is waiting for project approval from the Castilla-La Mancha government to move ahead with four utility-scale solar PV facilities in the central Spanish region.

The 250MW portfolio includes the “unique” 100MW Puertollano II project, which boasts bifacial panels, daisy-chain inverters and a 5MW/20MWh battery system. The other three projects have proposed capacities of 50MW. They do not include battery systems.

Iberdrola now has a project pipeline of 2.2GW in Spain. It wants to install a total of 3GW in the country by 2022.

In early August, the firm made its first solar foray into Portugal, when it was awarded 149MW of solar projects in the Portuguese govenrment's solar auction.

Iberdrola is currently developing the colossal 500MW Núñez de Balboa plant in western Spain, billed as Europe’s largest solar plant. In July, it received project financing for the project from the European Investment Bank and Spain’s state-owned bank the Insituto de Crédito Oficial.
