IKEA expands US solar footprint with 38th PV project

Swedish furniture retailer IKEA is continuing to expand its solar footprint in the US and has announced the completion of its 38th solar project at its store in Stoughton, Massachusetts.

The 590.8 kW customised PV system has been built on 10,962 square metres of roof space with 4,220 thin-film modules which will help to generate approximately 695,000 kWh of electricity every year.

The development, design and installation of the array was undertaken by REC Solar which has kitted out several other IKEA locations with solar including the company’s store in Sunrise, Florida.

This latest project adds to IKEA’s strong solar portfolio in the US where more than 85% of its stores have been equipped with solar. The company has one more location currently under construction and when that completes, almost 90% of its US locations will be home to a PV array.

IKEA owns and operates each of its solar energy systems atop its buildings as opposed to a solar lease or power purchase agreement. Worldwide, the firm has allocated US$1.8 billion to invest in renewable energy through 2015.
