After Arizona Public Service (APS) chose McCarthy Building to engineer, procure and construct its 14MW Hyder II Solar Power Plant in Hyder Arizona, the two companies noted that they have begun the permitting process for the new solar site.

“Hyder II is the sixth AZ Sun Project for APS,” said Barbara Lockwood, APS general manager of Energy Innovation. “Through the AZ Sun Program, we are adding 200MW of solar photovoltaic power plants across the state by 2015. We expect that these plants will generate clean energy for at least the next 30 years.”

Construction on the Hyder II facility is anticipated to begin in April. The project will have over 71,000 single-axis tracker PV panels, which will produce enough energy to power 3,500 Arizona homes. Commercial operation is slated for late 2013.

APS’ AZ Sun Program was approved by the Arizona Corporation Commission and will see APS invest in the development of up to 200MW of solar projects throughout Arizona. APS will finance and own the projects, which are designed and constructed by third-party solar developers, contractors and equipment providers.
