Del Webb will now include solar power alongside other energy-efficient features at its two new home Sun City communities in the Phoenix metro area. Featuring a 1.8kW roof- integrated solar system provided by SunPower, approximately 11,200 new buildings will now generate their own renewable energy, reducing the operational costs of each home.

Other standard energy-efficient features of the homes include high-efficiency heating and cooling systems (14 SEER HVAC), CFLs, enhanced attic insulation, tankless water heaters and low water use toilets and fixtures. In addition to reducing overall operational cost of the home, these standard features will reduce the home rating energy store (HERS) value to below 50.

“Adding solar at these Del Webb communities is the next logical step in the company’s pursuit to build a better, more energy efficient home,” said Jim Petersen, PulteGroup director of research and development. “This is the right time to make this commitment to the community and our future homebuyers. The tough economic times have made saving money even more meaningful and we expect the technology to be well accepted by our homeowners.”
