The Cambridge, Massachusetts-based Fraunhofer Center for Sustainable Energy Systems (CSE) has appointed CPV expert Geoffrey S. Kinsey, Ph.D. to the role of director of its Photovoltaic Technologies Group. Dr. Kinsey joins the organization from his former role as senior director of R&D at Amonix, where he led a team working on the optimization of III-V multijunction cells for solar power generators, recently reaching a module efficiency of 33% in outdoor operating conditions.

His new role at Fraunhofer CSE will see Dr. Kinsey lead strategy and business development for the organization as well as overseeing the Center's indoor PV module fabrication and testing laboratory in Cambridge and its outdoor PV test facilities in Revere, MA and Albuquerque, NM.

Dr. Kinsey’s former roles include a period as technical lead for CPV products at Boeing-Spectrolab where he worked on the development of high-efficiency multijunction cells for space and terrestrial applications. He has a B.S. from Yale University and a Ph.D. in solid-state electronics from the University of Texas at Austin. He has five patents pending, one patent issued and has been an active contributor to various solar and optoelectronics publications, including Photovoltaics International edition 15.

“Dr. Kinsey is an invaluable addition to a team that has already made significant industry impact over the past four years,” commented Dr. Christian Hoepfner, Fraunhofer CSE's scientific director. “His extensive industry background is very complementary to our existing core expertise in flat plate PV modules and materials technology, and strengthens the expertise and services we can offer to PV industry clients.”
