Abu Dhabi is in the process of establishing net metering regulations for small-scale solar in the region.

The Regulation & Supervision Bureau of Abu Dhabi is currently gathering public comment on the proposition which will allow for net metering of small solar sites of between 50kW and 5MW in capacity. In the process, the body hopes to set out any necessary requirements for implementation, establish a framework and ensure the safe construction, installation and O&M of small-scale PV systems.

This intention is a significant step forward for Abu Dhabi’s residential PV sector, as surplus energy exported to the grid is not currently compensated for. The Bureau does run a Self-Regulating Licence regime, but is considering whether energy net metering would be better for small-scale solar PV installations and systems.

The regulations come in support to the government’s drive for promoting clean energy. They also supplement the Distribution Companies demand side management initiatives and contribute to their corporate social responsibility towards promoting clean energy, according the Bureau.
