The Liberian government has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with multinational renewable energy company Gigawatt Global for the financing of a 10MW solar PV plant in Monrovia in West Africa.
Foreign Affairs Minister Marjon Kamara signed on behalf of the Liberian government, while Remy Reinstein, the new projects coordinator, signed on behalf of Gigawatt Global. The signing took place at the Permanent Mission of Liberia to the UN in New York last Friday.

According to reports, Reinstein indicated that the company has designs to install an additional 30MW in other parts of Liberia, aside from the 10MW plant in Monrovia.
The MoU states that Gigawatt Global will provide the Liberia Electricity Company (LEC) with a roadmap that details the process necessary for the construction of the 10MW plant. The government is to analyse any reports and studies submitted by the developer for approval within 30 days, as well as assisting in locating land sites for the facility.
Gigawatt Global currently has projects in Nigeria, Rwanda, Burundi and Georgia in the US.
Algeria
In similar news, Italian oil and gas major Eni has partnered with government-owned hydrocarbon company Sonatrach for a 10MW PV plant in the Bir Rebaa North (BRN) field.
The project is a step of the strategic cooperation agreement on renewables in Algeria that Eni's CEO, Claudio Descalzi, and Sonatrach’s CEO, Amine Mazouzi, discussed this summer, and is reportedly just one of the initiatives that the two companies plan to develop in the near future.
“Today Eni is the first oil & gas company to reach a strategic agreement in the field of solar energy in Algeria, a country with an important potential,” said Descalzi, in a statement.
The goal is to start activities on developing the facility before the end of the year.
