NextEra Energy Resources, a subsidiary of NextEra Energy, is in the process of purchasing four solar PV projects, totaling 40MW from First Solar. First Solar will continue with the development of the Sombra and Moore Solar Energy Centers, using their own thin-film solar modules and upon the projects reaching an operational state, NextEra’s Canadian subsidiary, NextEra Energy Canada, will assume full ownership and operation of the four projects.

“We’re pleased to forge this new customer relationship with NextEra Energy Resources, a company that shares our strong commitment to developing renewable energy in North America,” said Frank DeRosa, First Solar senior vice president of North American project development. “Together we look forward to bringing these projects online in 2011 and contributing to Canada’s clean energy needs.”

The Sombra and Moore Solar Energy Centers are located, respectively in the Sombra and Moore Townships of Ontario. Each 10MW project will use over 172,000 panels with CdTe thin-film technology on a fixed-tilt system.

Construction will begin on all four projects after government approvals are finalized, which is expected to occur in the first quarter of 2011. Commercial operation is slated for the end of 2011 with all power from the projects to be sold to the Ontario Power Authority under long-term contracts.
